Wall Art Size Guide
What size goes above a bed, a sofa or a desk, how high to hang it, and every size we print. The most common regret with wall art is ordering smaller than expected, so when you are between two sizes, take the larger one. Sizes are in inches, width first.
By where it hangs
- The long wall (panoramic)40 x 20 over a queen or sofa, 60 x 30 over a king or sectional
- Panoramic 2:1 canvas covers width without height: 40 x 20 spans two thirds of a queen headboard on its own, and a 60 x 30 owns the wall behind a sectional. Sold on selected wide pieces, canvas only.
- Above a bed30 x 40 over a queen, 36 x 48 over a king
- A queen headboard is 60 inches wide, a king is 76. Art should cover roughly half to two thirds of the headboard width. Hang the bottom edge 6 to 10 inches above it.
- Above a sofa30 x 40, or 36 x 48 on a wall longer than eight feet
- A three-seat sofa runs about 84 inches. Leave 8 to 12 inches between the sofa back and the bottom of the piece.
- Over a desk18 x 24 on a narrow wall, 30 x 40 on the wall behind you
- A 60 inch desk takes an 18 x 24 without crowding a monitor. The wall a camera or a visitor sees can carry a 30 x 40.
- Garage or home gym30 x 40 canvas
- Hang it in the rack's sightline at eye level when standing. Canvas has no glass to break and wipes clean.
- Hallway or entryway18 x 24 to 24 x 36
- You read a hallway piece from a few feet away and at an angle, so a smaller size still works.
- Above a bar or console30 x 40, 36 x 48 on a long wall
- Match the art to about two thirds of the furniture width below it.

Finished canvas sizes can vary by up to one eighth of an inch, which is the production tolerance. Most pieces are sold in portrait and landscape.
Four rules that decide it
- 1.Center of the piece at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. That is standing eye level and it is what galleries use.
- 2.Over furniture, the art covers about two thirds of the width below it and sits 6 to 12 inches above.
- 3.Between two sizes, go up. Undersized art on a big wall looks lost, and the extra inches are cheap next to the wall.
- 4.Measure the wall before you order. A 30 x 40 canvas needs about 40 inches of clear wall to not look crowded.
